Charleroi Airport (CRL) Transfer Guide 2026

Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) is the base for Ryanair, Wizz Air and TUI in Belgium. The fares are excellent. What catches most travellers out is the distance: CRL is 55 km from central Brussels, not 12 km like Zaventem. Getting that wrong can cost you two hours.

Where Charleroi actually is

The airport sits just north of the city of Charleroi, in Hainaut. Brussels is roughly a 50-minute drive on the E19 in clear traffic. During weekday rush hour, plan for 75 to 90 minutes. If you are heading to Bruges or Ghent instead, you are looking at a longer trip again — Bruges is around 130 km from CRL.

The shuttle bus and train

The Flibco shuttle runs from CRL to Brussels-Midi and takes about an hour when the motorway is clear. It is the cheapest option and perfectly reasonable if you are travelling light. The catch is what happens at Midi: if your final destination is not the station itself, you still need a metro, tram or taxi, and you are carrying your luggage through one of the busiest stations in Belgium.

There is no train station at the airport. The rail option means a bus to Charleroi-Sud first, then a train, then whatever you need at the far end. With bags or children, the connections are where the time disappears.

Private transfer

A private chauffeur meets you in arrivals and drives you directly to your address — hotel, home or office. No connections, no queue, no luggage on stairs. For two or more passengers the price gap against the shuttle narrows quickly, because a transfer is priced per vehicle rather than per person.

The practical advantage at CRL specifically is flight monitoring. Low-cost carriers shift schedules more often than legacy airlines, and a delayed arrival at 23:40 is a very different situation if the last shuttle has gone.

Choosing between them

Travelling alone, in daylight, with hand luggage and heading to Brussels-Midi? Take the shuttle. Arriving late, travelling as a group or family, carrying real luggage, or heading anywhere other than the station? A private transfer will almost always be the better use of your time and often costs less per head than you expect.
