Brussels to Bruges, Ghent & Antwerp: Route Guide

Belgium is small enough that its best-known cities are all within reach of Brussels in about an hour. That compactness is exactly why day trips work so well here — and why the choice between train and private car is less obvious than it looks.

Brussels to Bruges

Around 100 km, typically 75 to 90 minutes by road. Bruges is the classic Belgian day trip: medieval architecture, canals and a compact historic centre that is largely car-free. A private transfer makes most sense here when you are travelling as a group, or when you want to stop somewhere on the way — Ghent sits almost exactly on the route.

The train from Brussels-Midi is fast and frequent, so if you are two people travelling city-centre to city-centre, rail is hard to beat on price. The calculation changes with luggage, small children, or a hotel outside the ring.

Brussels to Ghent

Around 55 km and roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Ghent is the one visitors most often underestimate: a genuine university city with a working centre rather than a preserved one, and the Ghent Altarpiece in Saint Bavo’s Cathedral. Because it is close, Ghent works well as a half-day trip or as a stop on the way to Bruges.

Brussels to Antwerp

Around 50 km, usually 45 to 70 minutes depending on the ring. Antwerp is the diamond and fashion capital, with Rubens’ legacy and one of Europe’s great railway stations. The drive is straightforward outside peak hours; the Antwerp ring at 17:00 on a weekday is genuinely slow, so plan around it.

Combining cities in one day

Ghent and Bruges pair naturally — they sit on the same westward corridor, and a full-day trip covering both is comfortable with a driver. Antwerp points the other way, north-east, so it is better treated as its own trip rather than bolted onto the other two.

When a private car earns its cost

Trains in Belgium are good, and we will say so plainly. A private transfer is worth it when you are three or more people, when you want to stop where the train does not, when you are carrying luggage between hotels, or when you simply want the day to run on your schedule rather than the timetable’s.
